Flynn, a red mini rex, came into my life on July 21st, 2008. He is an energetic boy who loves to bonk me with his nose and jump into my lap, but he hates being picked up and only accepts petting on his terms.
Zuri, a broken blue velveteen lop. She is only eight weeks old and just came home on November 25th, 2008. We are still learning about her, but she seems like a laid-back and confident girl!Jess and Flynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09852312830628770014noreply@blogger.comBlogger40125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-362603108126749493.post-4791284101913022352009-01-19T11:46:00.003-05:002009-01-19T11:49:08.676-05:00Zuri, cuddle extroidinare.

Cuddle bug., originally uploaded by jess sully.

She was just being too adorable yesterday!

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/littleredbunny/3206809629/" title="sigh. I've just been busy with finals, christmas break, working, and classes to post on here lately.

Zuri's litterbox training has been a constant struggle. She seems to poo about 80% in her litterbox, but very rarely pees in there. I tried giving her fleece and towels, but they just became saturated with urine within a day or two. Then I tried just leaving her with the bare plastic bottom of her cage, but she ended up sitting in puddles and cleaning it up was beginning to be a huge, disgusting chore at least three times a day. So, I finally gave up and got her a dog crate with a grate. The grate is SO much better than the ones in rabbit cages- much thicker and stronger coated wire, doesn't cut into her feet, comfortable for her to rest on, and since it's meant to support the weight of a dog up to 85 lbs, the flooring doesn't sag beneath her and she doesn't make any noise jumping around on it. In the slide out tray, I put puppy pads which soak up a lot of liquid and contain the odor. The whole setup is easier to clean and I feel much better not leaving her sitting in her own feces all day long.

Flynn has settled down. He doesn't freak out when Zuri is out, although he does ask to be groomed and she grooms him through the cage bars sometimes. He'll even flop and eat in her presence, whereas he used to pace frantically. He's once again my relaxed little guy.

I know baths aren't usually recommended for rabbits, but urine started to scald Zuri's bottom, belly, and feet so I have been bathing her every 10 days or so with baby shampoo and oatmeal, which my vet recommended, as well as putting on some neosporin. Tonight, I believe, will probably have been her last bath, since she is no longer able to come in contact with her urine.

Flynn enjoys imitating plush toys.

... almost as much as he loves cheek scratches!Jess and Flynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09852312830628770014noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-362603108126749493.post-67180941888061985622008-11-29T20:06:00.003-05:002008-11-29T20:56:30.584-05:00The buns have a day out.

What was that you said? I decided to let her run around my room for awhile again- about a half hour. Flynn has been running around frantically ever since. She's quite hilarious to watch- those ears just go everywhere, and she chins everything in sight. Meanwhile, I have yet to ever witness Flynn chinning ANYTHING. In fact, when Zuri touched noses with Flynn through the cage today, she even chinned HIM. :) Silly girl.

Hmmm... to come out or not to come out? Isn't this picture great? I just love those ears!

Flynn is running about my bedroom now. I'm still making sure he gets more time out than Zuri and an equal amount of attention, so he doesn't get jealous. He started jumping up on the bed today :D This is something he was NEVER able to do before, no matter how hard he wanted to come up. It's nice, because now I don't have to sit on the floor just to be with him- he keeps jumping on and off the bed periodically to visit and occasionally get petted. He's been leaving a little trail of poos in his cage whenever Zuri's out and if he goes out right after her. I just put them all back in his litterbox and he's back to his wonderful habits quickly.Jess and Flynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09852312830628770014noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-362603108126749493.post-34457583241280156292008-11-26T18:21:00.002-05:002008-11-26T18:32:16.190-05:00My sleeping beauty.

Sleeping Beauty., originally uploaded by jess sully.

Zuri's doing even better today. As you can see, she is still calm and unaffected by strange noises, smells, and movements.
Her poos are still soft, and she has the habit of peeing in whichever far corner I moved the litterbox from, so I put in a giant cat litterbox with a homemade grate, like Flynn's. The grate is made of 1/2"x1/2" coated wire, so that when she eats the poos fall safely through. The grate has also stopped her from eating her litter, which I was concerned about.

Excuse me, I was TRYING to relax!

Since Zuri's poos have been a little firmer, I decided to let her run around the bedroom for awhile. They are caked with poop and urine, from wallowing in her soft poos, and it's quite disgusting. I'm just not quite sure how to do it without stressing her out. One idea I liked was soaking a towel with warm water and putting it in the kitchen sink, with about an inch of water, so she can walk around in it and let it soak in for awhile. Then, is there anything anyone recommends to scrub those little feetsies with? She doesn't mind being held and actually seems to like being close to me, but her feet simply gross me out!Jess and Flynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09852312830628770014noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-362603108126749493.post-90263425541007485472008-11-25T19:46:00.002-05:002008-11-25T19:58:11.091-05:00Zuri's here!

Pretty peepers., originally uploaded by jess sully.

We picked up Zuri today. She is one RELAXED bunny- not jumpy at all, which is a big difference from Flynn, who would be sent skittering away at the slightest movement or noise for weeks after we got him. She even flopped in her carrier and fell asleep on the way home while I was massaging her cheeks.

She has settled in quite nicely here. At first, she had some very sloppy, diarrhea poops. After filling her belly with hay and pellets, however, she is now leaving nice, round, mostly-solid poops. She seems a bit thin- her belly is a bit bloated/squishy, but you can feel her spine and ribs beneath her skin. I'm trying to remember if Flynn felt that way too? Well, either way, she has unlimited access to hay and pellets so hopefully she will put on a little weight soon! She's not really much smaller than Flynn- they are about the same length, but Flynn is much more filled in and muscular-looking. She's awfully scrawny, lanky, and awkward looking at the moment, especially with those crazy ears! I'm sure that will change in time.
It adds to her endearment ;)
Flynn is going absolutely crazy with the new baby in the house, but unfortunately they will not be allowed to meet each other for at least a month.

One relaxed baby. He's much happier in his cage now... instead of pacing back and forth by the door, he is content to play and nap happily in his cage even WITH the door open. (Although he still runs to greet me and expects some food when I walk in the room).
He doesn't struggle anymore when I lift him off the ground, and he smooshes down for pets quite readily now.
He seems more lethargic in his cage now, as well. I'm not sure if that's because it's cold outside, because he's getting older, or because he has a bigger cage now.

Jess and Flynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09852312830628770014noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-362603108126749493.post-20253734516987092212008-11-10T20:16:00.002-05:002008-11-10T20:19:23.322-05:00An unexpected bonding moment!

aw., originally uploaded by jess sully.

Flynn was being especially smooshy today... he kept pancaking down to the floor for pets. She did, however, put strict stipulations that I had to make sure all of my housemates agreed. After talking to my housemate Kate, who is EXTREMELY allergic to basically every animal on this planet, we both decided that it would be best to get a rex/mini rex because neither of us are allergic to rex fur.
At first, I was a little bummed, because this ruled out most of the breeds I was looking at. I really wanted a lop, but all lops have regular fur... right? WRONG! I discovered a lovely breed called the "velveteen lop" which is a miniature english lop with rex fur! Velveteens are hard to find in the US, since the breed is still very new and on it's way to becoming accepted by the ARBA. I managed to locate a breeder about 1.5 hours away. And now I have a baby on reserve :)
Here she is: (broken blue velveteen doe)

Isn't she beautiful? Ever. The closest thing I've seen him do to jump are his binkies, but usually he shoots sideways rather than up. Good thing Flynn isn't a basketball player... he has no vertical! :) He won't even jump OFF things. I suppose I shouldn't complain. It makes bunnyproofing easier!
FRIEND FOR FLYNN (Project FFF) update:
I'm terrible at making decisions. Right now, I'm trying to decide what kind of bunny friend to get for Flynn. Unfortunately, I found out that the two gray lionhead sisters have been bonded together, and since I can only have one new rabbit (per landlady), they are out of the question. I'm not sure about Amber, though, and there are other adorable buns at Midwest Rescue... except they still haven't replied to my adoption form. I'm hoping they got it!
I would love to rescue a bunny. The adoption fee covers spaying (and spaying here is EXPENSIVE), and they are in desperate need of homes. However, there's something about not knowing the rabbit's past, exact age, etc. that would bother me. I like having the opportunity to raise a baby rabbit and thus "mold" them. Who knows what terrible experiences rescue rabbits have had? Although, then again I would love to be the one to show those poor abandoned/abused/neglected rabbits that something good can come from humans.
The other option I'm considering is a dutch. I was very, very, very close to getting a little blue dutch this summer instead of Flynn- I even had one reserved - but decided not to because of allergies. However, nobody in the house has had allergies to Flynn, despite our many other allergies. Dutch are classified in the "relaxed" category rather than curious or exciteable (mini rexes like Flynn are "curious"). I think a dutch would give me what Flynn currently can't- more affection. I love Flynn and his challenges, don't get me wrong, but I just keep meeting all of these wonderfully affectionate buns and wishing Flynn was more lovey. He's still young though, so neutering and aging could help.
The dutch breeder is a wonderful person! She has beautiful rabbits, and unlike many other breeders, she sincerely cares about them, even insuring that the mismarked pets get good homes. (Many other breeders "cull" (kill) them or sell them for snakefood. She would NEVER do that! She has worked with me very extensively over the past several months and I feel as though I owe it to her. Besides, her rabbits are supposed to be the sweetest!
I also have always loved Hollands, but I'm scared of the potential allergy problems with that breed (they have longer, fuzzier "rollback" hair). Dutches have "flyback" hair, so it's shorter and probably better for allergies.
Jess and Flynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09852312830628770014noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-362603108126749493.post-84904746795629020412008-10-31T12:30:00.004-04:002008-10-31T12:37:09.342-04:00Carpet Pulling = a manly new doormat.

Manly Doormat., originally uploaded by jess sully.

Flynn has begun the annoying habit of pulling out the carpet in front of his cage. I've found little carpet threads strewn all over in front of it, and have caught him in the act several times. For lack of better ideas, I've temporarily solved the problem by covering the carpet with a nice pink towel. It looks sort of like a doormat!
I've been looking online at rescues for a new little girl-bun to bond with Flynn. Well, I found several that I like on the other side of the state:

Aren't they beautiful! They're all sisters, born on December 25th of 2007 (ON CHRISTMAS!). I have no idea why someone hasn't adopted them yet, but I'd be willing to make the drive for one! The best part is that they are already spayed, and the adoption fee is $90. Spaying rabbits here costs around $300 so that's a great deal if you ask me! I sent in an adoption form for them, hopefully I'll hear back soon.Jess and Flynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09852312830628770014noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-362603108126749493.post-15455020816217203532008-10-30T10:18:00.001-04:002008-10-30T10:18:54.052-04:00This is not dignified!

This is not dignified!!, originally uploaded by jess sully.

Flynn is becoming slightly more tolerant of being held, but he definitely doesn't enjoy it! He always knows what's coming when it's time for some practice, and before you know it, all you can see is a flick of his back feet and he's gone! I have to corner him, but once he's up and restrained he's tolerable-- not happy, but not frightened, either.
I have not been able to trance him, but I think that's a good thing. After all, a rabbit trance is actually a fear response to a predator-- they freeze hoping the predator will think they're dead so that they can spring to life and escape when the bear, eagle, falcon, cat, etc least expects it. He stayed still on my lap for about 30 seconds at a time though, before flipping over-- and he didn't run away, just sat in my lap and expected an apology.
Strangely enough, we had our longest petting session of all today, about five minutes after I'd put him on his back in my lap (like the picture). Perhaps, even though he hates it, he is learning to trust my hands a little more?
Jess and Flynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09852312830628770014noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-362603108126749493.post-35498481926269477822008-10-28T16:07:00.003-04:002008-10-28T16:09:53.401-04:00Window-Licking Good :)

Window-Licking Good :), originally uploaded by jess sully.

Flynn had an unexpected start to his days of free-roaming my bedroom. Every morning when I wake up, I let Flynn run around while I shower and get ready to go to class. Well, I woke up late today and in my frenzy to make it to class on time, he decided to hide. I wasn't in the mood to chase him back to his cage, so I shut the bedroom door and left. Five hours later, I returned home to find one content little bunny relaxing against the heating vent. After a long inspection, I didn't find any incriminating evidence of chewed baseboards, cords, books, or carpet... so I think it was a success. You should've seen the look on his face when I burst into the room- he yawned and rolled over as if to say, "What's all the commotion about? Can't you see I'm trying to nap in MY room?"
As you can see in the above picture, he likes to be on my bed. And one of his favorite things to do WHILE he's on my bed is to look out and lick the window. Is this normal? He seems rather transfixed by it. Don't worry, the window hasn't been cleaned with chemicals or anything lately... what college student has time for that?

Hello there, Handsome!Jess and Flynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09852312830628770014noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-362603108126749493.post-8838372506819380772008-10-27T18:40:00.002-04:002008-10-27T21:53:54.548-04:00There's another world out there...

A whole world out there..., originally uploaded by jess sully.

Flynn and I are still alive, I promise. We've just had a lot going on with midterms and fall break travelling.
I forced Flynn to explore my bed today, by picking him up; evil, I know.
Actually, I've been making sure to pick him up a few times a day now, so he gets used to the idea... especially since he's going to the vet soon.
I've called around to vets in the GR area about neutering... prices range from $131 to $289. I found one that has two rabbit-experienced vets that charges $176 but that includes a new/well pet exam. The place sounds lovely, I might go with them.
I've decided to get Flynn neutered within two weeks from now. His behavior and litter habits are still wonderful, but I just want to curb the behaviors before they start, if at all possible. He has, however, started circling me.

Flynn's been the perfect bunny lately, actually. Although he doesn't feel the need to be petted at all. He has no problem getting in your lap and up in your face, but he very rarely lets me pet him on his head. I can stroke his back, but he just ignores it. I wish he were more cuddly or affectionate. But oh well, what can you do?
Flynn usually gets to be out for hours on end as long as I'm home and in the room, but I think I'll start letting him out for short periods while I'm not home (while I'm at class) to see how that goes. I just feel so bad leaving him all alone all day in his crate.
He IS probably getting a friend in a little over a month, though :) Either a dutch or mini rex doe... hopefully bonding goes well :DJess and Flynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09852312830628770014noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-362603108126749493.post-53371218615275183512008-10-15T15:20:00.002-04:002008-10-15T15:22:37.130-04:00A salad connoisseur.

going, going... gone., originally uploaded by jess sully.

Flynn loves his salad. His favorites are tomato and romaine, and his least favorites (which he has merely nibbled the last three times I offered it) are cucumber and carrots. I've never met a bunny who disliked carrots so much. It's odd!
Should I be limiting his fresh foods? I've only been giving him about a handful of lettuce and a couple slices of tomato and whatnot a day. Of course, the grumpiness probably had to do with the fact that I managed to clip his back nails a little bit today--
I ambushed him; I had no choice. I cornered him, pulled him onto my lap, wrapped him in a blanket, and flipped him on his back... all in about 3.5 seconds. He stayed "tranced" for about... one minute. I clipped an itsy-bitsy bit from those toenails, but it was hard to tell how much to take off because those nails were so much longer, thicker, and darker than the front ones!
He accepted my peace offering (more baby snacks) about two minutes after his traumatization. They got along fantastically. My brother was enamored with him yet very patient. And thanks to all the treats and attention he was getting, Flynn loved him right back.

<img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3055/2932854779_9574395c55_b.jpg" style="border: solid 2px #000000;" width="500" height="375"; alt=""/></alt>
<img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3269/2933709462_08b4d89977_b.jpg" style="border: solid 2px #000000;" width="375" height="500"; alt="" /></alt>
<img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3044/2932853451_3e587cd451_b.jpg" style="border: solid 2px #000000;" width=”375” height="500"; alt="" /></alt>

Jess and Flynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09852312830628770014noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-362603108126749493.post-60755943870377288802008-10-08T15:34:00.004-04:002008-10-12T01:02:50.995-04:00What happens when Flynn wants attention.

Mine., originally uploaded by jess sully.

</alt>Jess and Flynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09852312830628770014noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-362603108126749493.post-74930425541486734482008-10-06T10:09:00.005-04:002008-10-06T10:19:21.732-04:00Flynn's first taste of greens.

What... is...that...?, originally uploaded by jess sully.

I decided to try Flynn on greens last night, because it suddenly occurred to me that he MUST be old enough now. I've just been too busy with school to take the time! He smelled the plate and even moved the lettuce around a little bit, but he wanted nothing to do with it.

But, of course, as soon as I pretended to eat it, he HAD to know what he was missing! He ate the whole piece you see here.
</alt>
And happily :)

Thanks for the suggestions, I think I'll wait awhile before I get him neutered. Hopefully he will keep up his excellent litter habits and manners until then :)
One more question- in the above picture, you may notice how long his nails are on his back feet. I tried in vain to cut his nails yesterday but could only manage to do the front feet. First I tried just sitting him on my lap to do it, and that was definitely not going to work. So then I wrapped him in a bunny burrito with a blanket and managed to do the front paws. I could not manage to hold his back feet still long enough to do them though, because he REFUSES to be laid on his back for a trancing... trust me. So how am I supposed to get those back feet? They have to be pulled back in an awkward angle the way I tried yesterday, and he didn't like it- I don't blame him.
He gave me a good thump after safely back on the ground!Jess and Flynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09852312830628770014noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-362603108126749493.post-45333995737520924872008-10-06T00:23:00.010-04:002008-10-06T02:09:58.017-04:00My pretty boy.

My pretty boy., originally uploaded by jess sully.

We're still here, I promise!
Sorry for not posting for so long. It was quite unnecessary!

Flynn and I have officially moved into Grand Rapids. The first few days I was actually quite worried- it was so HOT in the room that all he did was lay around and breathe really heavy. Slowly but surely, as my room cooled and he acclimated himself to his new domain (my bedroom), he settled in quite nicely.
He's been behaving very nicely! He still uses his litterbox 100% of the time, even despite the new domain. This means he gets quite a bit of free time out of his cage, and he is getting a new (bigger) dog crate very soon, too.
He turned 4 months old on Monday- I think this means he is ready to be neutered. He hasn't started spraying or humping, but every once in awhile I catch a glimpse of his testicles. I think I'll start calling around to local vets soon.
When do you all think I should get his surgery done? Soon or after his "teenager-ness" sets in?Jess and Flynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09852312830628770014noreply@blogger.com4
